Job Description

RAMS Engineer is responsible for supporting the delivery of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) activities for Light Rail Transit (LRT) infrastructure projects in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The role contributes across the design, construction, testing, commissioning, and operational readiness phases of rail systems, with a focus on Rolling Stock, Signaling and Control, Power Infrastructure, and Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility (OMSF) assets. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, the position supports compliance with CENELEC railway safety standards, project safety requirements, and regulatory expectations through technical analyses, hazard management, and performance verification activities.

The ideal candidate possesses a minimum of five years of railway RAMS experience, strong knowledge of functional safety and risk assessment methodologies, and demonstrated involvement in hazard analysis, safety case development, reliability engineering, and commissioning support on transit or metro projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct reliability prediction studies, availability modeling, and maintainability assessments using fault tree analysis (FTA), reliability block diagrams (RBD), and FMEA/FMECA methodologies.
  • Perform Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), and Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA) to identify and assess technical risks across railway systems.
  • Maintain the project hazard log and coordinate hazard mitigation tracking, verification, and closure activities.
  • Support the preparation of safety cases and safety justification reports for regulatory submissions and project approvals.
  • Review contractor and supplier RAMS deliverables, including reliability analyses, FMECA reports, and safety documentation for compliance verification.
  • Ensure RAMS activities comply with EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain safety requirements traceability matrices linking hazards, design controls, validation activities, and verification evidence.
  • Participate in design reviews and technical assessments to confirm RAMS requirements are incorporated into system and subsystem designs.
  • Collect, analyze, and report failure data, MTBF, MTTR, and operational availability metrics during testing and commissioning activities.
  • Verify RAMS acceptance criteria during system integration testing, trial running, and pre-revenue service validation.
  • Support incident investigations and root cause analysis activities during commissioning and early operational phases.
  • Prepare RAMS performance reports, technical documentation, and stakeholder presentations for project leadership and clients.
  • Interface with Independent Safety Assessors (ISA) and support safety audits, reviews, and regulatory assessments.
  • Contribute to operational safety procedures covering normal operations, degraded operation modes, and emergency response scenarios.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in RAMS engineering within rail, metro, LRT, transit, or railway infrastructure projects.
  • Working knowledge of CENELEC railway safety standards including EN 50126, EN 50128, and EN 50129.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting hazard analysis, risk assessment, and safety case development activities.
  • Experience performing reliability prediction, availability analysis, maintainability assessments, and statistical failure analysis.
  • Knowledge of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) requirements and functional safety principles associated with signaling and control systems.
  • Proficiency with RAMS tools such as PTC Windchill, Isograph Reliability Workbench, ITEM ToolKit, or equivalent platforms.
  • Experience reviewing technical documentation, safety deliverables, and compliance evidence generated by contractors and suppliers.
  • Strong analytical, technical reporting, and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams, contractors, clients, and regulatory authorities.

Assets
